The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking a dynamic physician leader to serve as our next Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs.  Our Department aims to be the premier academic department of emergency medicine renowned globally for education, unrivaled patient-centered care, pioneering research, and for developing the next generation of leaders in medicine. 

The Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs provides executive leadership over the Department’s clinical enterprise. This critical role provides leadership and oversight over clinical operations, physician management, and financial stewardship across all clinical sites.

Partnering with leaders throughout our Department and hospital system, the Vice Chair drives operational strategy, optimizes care delivery, improves patient access, enhances patient experience, and implements innovative care models to optimize clinical outcomes and achieve operational excellence. Additionally, the role collaborates with our Department’s Associate Vice Chair for Quality and Safety on patient safety initiatives while directly mentoring and guiding our individual Emergency Department Medical Director teams.

As a highly visible senior leader, the Vice Chair regularly collaborates with key stakeholders—including Departmental faculty, hospital system administrators, state and local partners, and others— to prioritize key initiatives, allocate resources, and ensure consistent delivery of unrivaled, high-quality, exemplary patient care.

Essential Functions

•        Provides executive oversight of clinical operations, ensuring services align with UMSOM, UMDEM, and hospital standards, bylaws, and policies.
•        Drives strategy and ensures success for clinical operations across all Department sites, partnering with the Department Chair and senior executives to establish strategic clinical priorities and performance expectations.
•        Partners with UMDEM administrative and financial leadership to manage clinical budgets, revenue cycle performance, and expenses, ensuring strict alignment with operational decisions and fiscal goals.
•        Directly oversees, mentors, and develops Emergency Department Medical Directors to ensure consistency in leadership practices, operational execution, and physician management across all sites.
•        Collaborates with Medical Directors, hospital executives, and nursing leadership to establish clinical goals that align with institutional priorities, regulatory mandates, and evidence-based practices.
•        Partners with the Associate Vice Chair of Quality & Patient Safety to identify and support initiatives that enhance clinical quality and patient safety.
•        Partners with the UMDEM Director of Risk Management to provide oversight for clinical site risk management activities, including peer reviews, adverse event evaluations, and corrective action planning.
•        Drives physician workforce strategy, encompassing staffing models, productivity benchmarks, recruitment, onboarding, retention, and leadership succession planning; serves on the UMDEM Search & Staffing Committee.
•        Partners with the Department Chair on oversight of professional services agreements and clinical contracts for current and expanding Emergency Medicine services.
•        Coordinates with Medical Directors to ensure uniform scheduling practices, robust coverage models, and strict adherence to contractual obligations across all locations.
•        Represents UMDEM on hospital, health system, and university committees focused on clinical operations and physician practice management.
•        Fosters a departmental culture rooted in engagement, professionalism, accountability, diversity, equity, inclusion, and faculty well-being.
•        Advances the department’s academic mission by ensuring clinical operations support and enable education, research, and scholarly activities.
•        Partners with the Department Chair, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development, Chief Administrative Officer, and Director of Practice Operations to develop and maintain a Leadership Training Program.

Minimum Qualifications

•        Residency trained and board-certified in Emergency Medicine.
•        Minimum of 10 years of post-residency, full-time clinical practice in Emergency Medicine.
•        Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
•        Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership and administrative experience in emergency medicine (e.g., Medical Director or equivalent clinical leadership role).
•        Demonstrated business acumen and financial leadership experience; an MBA or equivalent degree is preferred.
•        Proven commitment to ongoing professional and personal leadership development.
